Aksaray has been an important weaving center
back to the time of the Seljuk Turkmen dynasties
in Anatolia. Aksaray was a collection point for
Karaman (Karamanid, Karamanoglu) Turkmen rugs and
in the 14th century the Moroccan scholar and
traveler Ibn
Battuta (born 1304, died 1368 or 1369) wrote that
Aksaray rugs had no equal in the country were
imported to many lands including Syria, Iraq,
Egypt, India, China, and the lands of the Turks.
The Karaman Turkmen lived on the Konya plain
between Konya, Aksaray and Larende (present day
Karaman). Today Aksaray is a Province, a
District and the capital city of each. There are
7 districts including: Agaçören, Aksaray,
Eskil, Gülagaç, Güzelyurt, Ortaköy, and
Sariyahsi.
