The Qashqai Il is a confederation of tribes based in Southwest Iran. Primarily in Fars province the Qashqai have been living in that area since the early 16th century when the land rights were granted to them by the first Safavid Shah Ismail Safavi. The Qashqai are Turkmen of Seljuk Oguz decent. Qashqai may properly be categorized as a dialect of Southern Azeri.

Qashqai rugs have long been one of the most sought after Persian rugs by collectors. recently the Qashqai have stopped weaving their traditional rugs and have overwhelmingly converted to weaving gabbeh rugs. Consequently traditional Qashqai rugs will become increasingly more rare in the marketplace.
